A new building construction JumpStart program has been recently added to the training agenda at Skilled Trades of West Alabama. The inaugural class started on April 18th and is held on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm in Skilled Trades new building construction center. The program is designed to prepare individuals for a career in the building construction and carpentry trade. New classes are currently being scheduled.
The course is a hands-on curriculum combining classroom instruction and shop projects to provide relevant, applicable skills in the trade. Construction methods and building materials will be thoroughly covered along with other basic skills. Among the subjects to be included are job site safety, terminology and best practices, construction math and measurements, safe use of hand and power tools, reading and interpretation of blueprints and building plans, applicable building codes and building layouts, framing and finishing, and collaboration with other trades involved on the site.
To be eligible for the program, which is being provided at no cost, an individual must be 18 years of age or older, eligible to work in the U.S., pass a drug screening and have a current, valid driver’s license. In some cases, an orientation and personal interviews may be required. Applications can be made online at www.skilledtradesofwestalabama.com
